Mar Roxas gave way to Noynoy Aquino in 2010 for Presidency

Breaking News- Senator Mar Roxas II has announced his withdrawal from the 2010 presidential race, at a press conference at Club Filipino, Green Hills, San Juan, September 1 2009. Senator Roxas has given way to his Liberal party-mate Sen. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III as the standard bearer of the Liberal Party in the 2010 presidential elections.

Here is the transcript speech of Senator Mar Roxas at Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan.

Country above self.

Our nation is in trouble. Leadership is bankrupt. Institutions are in disarray. People are hungry.

Noynoy Aquino and I share the same outrage over the mess we are all in, the same way we share the solution-clean, honest, selfless public service.

Kailangan nating ayusin. Matindi ang kalaban. We need a determined force for good far stronger than the festering evil around us.

We need to fight just as our own fathers fought dictatorship, and just as both died believing that good will conquer evil.

Noynoy and I want to make a difference, but we also know that we need to unite to achieve what we want.

I am the President of the Liberal Party.

It is within my power to preside over a potentially divisive process or to make the party a bridge for the forces of change. I choose to lead unity, not division. Bilang pinuno ng aking Partido, magdedesisyon ako.

Mahal ko ang Partido Liberal. My grandfather founded it. My father led it during the most difficult times of Martial Law.

He inspired me-to stay the course, to fight the good fight, to pass the test of true character. To believe.

Over the weekend, Noynoy and I had many long conversations... Masinsinang usapan. We agreed: Let us forget about ourselves for a moment. This is not about us, this is about our people and our country. This is about our common dream. The dream of our parents.

But let us not remain a country of dreamers. Tama na ang pangarap. Gawin na natin, ngayon.

Today, I am announcing my support for the candidacy of Noynoy Aquino for President in 2010.

Noy has made it clear to me that he wants to carry the torch of leadership.

The passing of our beloved former President Aquino has reawakened a passion among us. I acknowledge this as fuel to bring us to the realization of our dream: Good will triumph over evil.

I do this for unity in support of change. And if that means that somebody must make the sacrifice, it must be me. Ako na.

To you Noy, I say: I began the campaign to sow the seeds para sa pagbabago at reporma. You must now be the one to grow them in the arena of leadership.

Hindi kami maghihiwalay ni Noy. I will stand with him.

Bayan bago sarili!

Hindi ko kayo pababayaan! Lalaban tayo!

Drive on to gather 1M signatures for Noynoy

The group that convinced Corazon Aquino to run for president in the 1986 snap election called by dictator Ferdinand Marcos has embarked on a similar campaign. They are seeking to gather more than a million signatures to encourage the late former President’s only son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, to also run for president.

This time, the campaign’s prime mover is Edgardo Roces, a son of Joaquin “Chino” Roces, the newspaper publisher who began a signature campaign called Cory Aquino for President Movement 24 years ago.

Wednesday, a booth with a yellow umbrella for a shade, surrounded by tarpaulins with the slogan “Noynoy for President,” was set up on Redemptorist Street beside the Baclaran Church in Parañaque City. Some asked questions and said it was better for Noynoy to seek the vice presidency. Still, others said they had made up their mind that Noynoy would be a good president.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the group had collected 2,000 signatures.

Presidential Hopefuls at ANC Leadership Forum

It was their first chance for a face-off, but no fireworks lit up the gathering of presidential hopefuls at a forum where the Arroyo administration took much of the beating.

Senators Manuel Roxas II, Richard Gordon, Francis Escudero, Pampanga Gov. Eddie Panlilio and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro were thrown questions ranging from serious and sensitive to light and personal during the ANC Leadership Forum at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City the other night.

The forum, which was also in line with ABS-CBN’s multi-platform launch of “Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo: Ako Ang Simula,” was launched exactly a year before the May 11, 2009 elections. Most of the audience were students of the university.

Invited but conspicuously absent were senators Panfilo Lacson, Manuel Villar, Loren Legarda, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and Metro Manila Development Authority Bayani Fernando.

Asked whether they would support an investigation of the Arroyo family for alleged corruption, all five said they would but Teodoro and Gordon stressed the need for evidence and that they would not do it out of vindictiveness.

Senator Bong Revilla to run for Vice President in 2010?

Sabi niya, 'Anak, you're still young.

Ayaw niya, gusto niyang makasigurado ng panalo kasi one-on-one 'yan.

"Sabi niya, 'You're still young, you don't need to rush, anak.' Tapos, umiiyak siya. Kaya nakakapangilabot. So, I'll still run as senator. I'm still young and I'm willing to wait," saad ng actor-politician.
